284 Excellence Film Festival
In 2025, the 284 Excellence Film Festival held its inaugural edition. The first time the platform stepped beyond its roots as the 284 Excellence Film Competition to become a true international festival. What began as a local BVI competition in 2022, launched to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the BVI Film Commission, expanded into a global stage for Caribbean storytelling, welcoming films from the region and around the world.
Across International Feature, International Shorts, Regional Shorts, National Local Lens and National Student categories, filmmakers brought stories of resilience, culture and imagination to audiences in the British Virgin Islands. Below are the highlights, the winners, and the partners who made it possible.
CELEBRATING CARIBBEAN STORIES
The 284 Excellence Film Festival originated as a local film competition commemorating the 25th anniversary of the BVI Film Commission. In 2023, it was officially named the 284 Excellence Film Competition, continuing its mission to spotlight the creativity and talent of filmmakers across the British Virgin Islands.
What began as a grassroots initiative quickly evolved into a dynamic platform for emerging and established storytellers. Participants produced short films across genres including drama, sci-fi, documentary, horror, and music video, supported by workshops, mentorships, and public screenings. The competition helped nurture local talent, inspire new artistic voices, and strengthen the Virgin Islands' growing film community.
Now rebranded as the 284 Excellence Film Festival, the platform has expanded its reach and serves as an international stage for adapting Caribbean stories for the screen.
The 284 Excellence Film Festival aims to become a globally recognised event that celebrates excellence in film highlighting the richness of Caribbean stories. It provides a platform for films that honour the region's heritage, culture, and traditions. Dedicated to bringing Caribbean literature to life, 284XFF challenges filmmakers to adapt works by Caribbean authors for the screen, fostering greater appreciation for the region's literary and storytelling traditions.
By showcasing diverse voices and groundbreaking works from around the world, the festival aims to connect the Caribbean diaspora, providing a space for reliving, sharing, and celebrating Caribbean stories. Through an annual celebration of cinematic achievements, we seek to bridge cultures and elevate emerging talents in the global film artistry.
