The British Virgin Islands marked a major milestone in its creative industry with the successful inaugural launch of the 284 Excellence Film Festival, held from 30th October to 2nd November 2025. The festival brought together filmmakers, industry professionals, students, and audiences from across the Territory, the wider Caribbean, and the international film community.
In its first year, the festival received 30 film submissions from 16 locations across International, Regional, and National categories, reflecting a strong appetite for Caribbean-centred storytelling and global creative exchange. Submissions showcased a wide range of narratives, styles, and voices, underscoring the region's growing presence in the global film landscape.
The festival was further elevated by the presence of esteemed headlining guests and industry professionals, including Producer Dianne Ashford, Executive Producer Anthony Davis Jr., Award-Winning Producer Autumn Bailey Ford, Award-Winning and Emmy-Nominated Producer CJ Faison, alongside acclaimed Actor Woody McClain. Their participation brought invaluable insight, inspiration, and mentorship to local and regional creatives.
Festival activities spanned the Territory, with nightly screenings hosted at Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), and Peg Leg's at Nanny Cay, creating accessible and engaging spaces for audiences to experience the films. The weekend officially commenced with a Welcome Dinner at Rhythm and Sands Restaurant, setting the tone for connection and celebration, and concluded with the Fade to Black: Closing and Awards Ceremony at UP's Cineplex, where winners were announced and excellence in filmmaking was recognised.
In addition to screenings, the festival hosted an intimate meet-and-greet session and a panel discussion with featured guests, offering attendees the opportunity to engage directly with industry professionals, discuss challenges, share experiences, and explore opportunities for growth within the film sector.
